Vineyard Improvement Program FAQ’s

Can I get a contract on a vineyard that I already removed?

Maybe. If you began work before April 12, 2018 (the date of the Concord Summit), it will not qualify. If you began work after that date and are able to document work done, you can apply for the program. Otherwise the work should begin after the contract is established.

Can I replant Concords?

Yes. If the business plan shows that by keeping it as a Concord vineyard there will be an increase in production, enhanced farm profitability, and/or increased environmental compatibility of the farm operation or IPM compatibility with neighboring vineyards.

Is drainage work included in the land preparation?

All reasonable costs are eligible and need to be itemized. The landowner/vineyard manager can be reimbursed up to $3,000 per acre ($1,500 for removal and $1,500 for replant). Drainage work would be considered as part of replanting.

The site is poor, that is why I need to tear out the Concords. Do I need to replant in that same poor site?

If the site will not be suitable for an agricultural commodity, you can apply the acreage of the removal to replant in another site in close proximity. That initial site will need to have complete removal and a cover crop planted.

When will I receive the money?

Because this is a reimbursement program, the money will be distributed once all work is done, receipts submitted, and final site visit has been completed.

What types of crops are eligible for reimbursement?

Grape varieties that are suitable for the region. Fruit orchards. Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, asparagus. Basically if it requires planting rootstock it will be eligible.

Seed costs for cover crops, field crops and vegetables are not eligible for replant reimbursement but can be planted in the removal area. Solar panels may also be placed in the removal area, but are not eligible for replant reimbursement under this project.
